How to play a water sort puzzle

  1. 1

    Tap to lift

Tap a vial and it rises out of the rack.

  2. 2

    Tap to pour

Tap another. Liquid moves onto its own color, or into empty space.

  3. 3

    Sort them all

When every vial holds a single color, the board is done.

A relaxing puzzle game that plays offline

  • No pressure

No timer, no lives, no fail state. Undo anything, stop mid-puzzle, come back tomorrow.

  • Levels that never run out

Levels are generated rather than authored, so there is no last one. Every board is machine-checked to be solvable before you see it.

  • Hints that actually help

A hint shows the next pour on the shortest way home, so following one never costs you a star.

  • A new brew daily

A daily puzzle, one fresh board every day, tuned to how far you have come.

  • Made to be read

Colorblind marks give every color its own symbol, so the board works without relying on hue.

  • Plays with no connection

An offline puzzle game in full. No wifi, no account, no sign-up. Progress lives on your phone, not on a server.

Three difficulty modes, three separate ladders

Difficulty is spare working space, not color count. Each mode has its own curve and spends that space at its own moment, and each keeps its own progress — so you can drop into an easier one for an evening without losing your place.

  • Easy

An extra spare tube and a lighter shuffle.

Capacity stays at four segments, you never drop below two spare tubes, and the shuffle is the shallowest in the game. It climbs from three colors to ten, slowly.

    Colors
    3 → 10
    Spare tubes
    3 → 2
    Vial depth
    4
  • Medium

The curve the game is tuned around.

The default ladder. Colors widen every few dozen levels, the second spare tube goes at 351, and vials deepen to five segments at 501 — which is where the lower liquid stops being something you can see and starts being something you have to dig for.

    Colors
    3 → 10
    Spare tubes
    2 → 1
    Vial depth
    4 → 5
  • Hard

One more color, one less place to put it.

Runs a step ahead of Medium the whole way and spends its spare tube at level 101, a hundred levels early. The endgame is a flat twelve colors with a single tube to work in.

    Colors
    4 → 12
    Spare tubes
    2 → 1
    Vial depth
    4 → 5

What it does not do

Decant is free, and ads are how it pays for itself. You will see one between levels now and then, and you can choose to watch one for a spare vial when a board has you stuck. That is the whole arrangement.

There is no account, no sign-up and nothing to log in to. Your progress is saved on your phone, not on a server. The game works with no connection at all.

Good to know

Is this the same as color sort or bottle sort?

Same puzzle, different name. Depending on who is naming it, this genre gets called water sort, color sort, liquid sort or bottle sort — you pour one container into another until each one holds a single color. Decant is the casual version of it: no timer, no lives, and no way to lose a board.

Is Decant a ball sort puzzle?

No. Ball sort is the same idea played with colored balls stacked in tubes; Decant pours liquid, which means a pour can move several segments of one color at once and the order inside a vial matters differently. If you came here from a ball sort game, the controls will feel familiar and the puzzles will not.

Is it free?

Yes, free to play and supported by ads. You will see a full-screen ad between levels now and then, never during one. Rewarded ads — the ones that give you a spare vial or coins — are always your choice.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. The game is fully playable offline. Ads need a connection; nothing else does.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your progress is stored on your device.

How many levels are there?

Levels are generated rather than hand-built, so there is no end to reach. Every one is checked to be solvable before it reaches you.

How do stars work?

On efficiency. The game works out the shortest solution your board actually has, then compares it with the way you played. Within 85% of it is three stars, within half is two, finishing at all is one.

Is it colorblind friendly?

There is a setting that puts a distinct symbol on every color, so a board can be read by shape as well as by hue.

What do I do when a board is stuck?

Nothing is lost. Undo as far back as you like, take a hint, or add a spare vial to buy yourself somewhere to pour. A board can be restarted from the top at any point, and because there is no fail state, being stuck costs you nothing but the moves.

Which devices does it run on?

Android and iOS, phones and tablets, in portrait. It is a small game and does not need a recent handset.
